In my twenties, I apprenticed for a master potter in Japan. This experience opened my eyes to a world in which art, nature and presentation come together as one. When I came home, I worked as a professional potter, specializing in porcelain and unusual glazes. Twenty-five years and four children later, I returned to Japan to visit my teacher. Following a reflective afternoon in an old Buddhist temple and its surrounding gardens, I happened to stroll past a tiny shop filled with assorted handbags made of kimono fabric. I was attracted to the bags’ simple forms and colorful patchwork designs. Deciding which one to purchase was very difficult. They were all so beautiful! Eventually I left the store with an armful of purses to give as gifts to family and friends.

When I got home, I just couldn’t stop thinking about the bags. I wrote to the storeowner, asking her to send an assortment of handbags and included in the note the remainder of my Japanese yen. About six weeks later I got the bags. —I excitedly called everyone I knew to come over and see what had just arrived from Japan. When they saw how unique and beautifully crafted the bags were, everyone clamored to buy more, so I thought about importing them. I asked a Japanese friend to contact the owner and vouch for my good character (an important consideration when doing business in Japan).

Happily, I won the owner’s trust and within months I began receiving boxes of merchandise. Eventually, I started outlining ideas for new designs and soon these were incorporated into new bags. Word got out and more and more people began coming over to my showroom enjoying the special attention and exclusivity. Everyone that sees another Jotobag on the street feels like they’re part of the club. It’s really something!
